GOANEWS

The general elections, in India, are over and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won enough seats in the Parliament, to form a government with the help of some minor parties. The BJP government won a vote of confidence by a slim majority.

Both of Goa’s incumbent Members of Parliament lost. North Goa elected Ravi Sitaram Naik of the Congress Party, replacing Ramakant Khalap (Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party), who came in third behind a BJP candidate. South Goa elected Francisco Sardinha, also of the Congress Party, replacing Churchill Alemao (United Goan Democratic Party), who came in third behind another BJP candidate.

At the Center, Mr. Vajpayee (BJP) is the new Prime Minister, while Sonia Gandhi has been chosen as the President of the Congress Party.
